Yogacharya BKS Iyengar (1918 - 2014) is recognized as one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world. At a young age BKS Iyengar was one of the earliest students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is often referred to as ‘the father of modern yoga’.

Through his intense, dedicated and devotional practice of over 75 years he reached a profound understanding of the body and its deeper aspects such as mind, intellect, emotions and spirit. By his intellectual and spiritual practices he has masterminded the techniques which can be used by all practitioners of yoga, irrespective of age, gender, method and style.
He has made it possible for ordinary humans to experience the ancient practice of yoga and the wisdom of the yoga sutras. He was considered as supreme yogi and genius man. His has authored many books and articles on yoga, among them ‘Light on Yoga’ (first published in 1966), which is considered as the ‘bible of yoga’ and modern classic text for all serious yoga students and professional teachers throughout the world.
The heart and soul of Iyengar Yoga is The Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI), located in Pune, Maharashtra. India. The Institute was established in 1975 and is dedicated to Smt. Ramamani Iyengar, the wife of Yogacharya BKS Iyengar. Its directors are Geeta S. Iyengar (BKS Iyengar’s eldest daughter) and Prashant S. Iyengar (BKS Iyengar’s son). Iyengar Yoga students from all over the world come here to receive the essence of yoga and study under the guidance of the Iyengar family.
